The psychiatry department of En Chu Kong Hospital (ECKH) has started providing outpatient services since 1998. Our mission is to promote mental health and to build a new paradigm of community mental health service. Following the start of outpatient service, a series of mental health services have been developed, including psychiatric daycare and home care. We also facilitate a mutual interaction between psychiatric patients and their families. From the perspective of bio-psycho-social model of mental health care, we aim to fulfill the ultimate goal of holistic health care via clinical intervention.

Outpatient service
Our professional team includes board-certified psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists, and psychiatric nurses. We provide health care services for a variety of mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, anxiety disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, neurocognitive disorder (dementia) with associated psychiatric disorders, sleep disorder, substance use disorder, as well as child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.
Daycare

Psychiatric daycare provides various rehabilitation programs for the patients who live with their families in the community. Usually, the patients attend daycare daily during weekdays, where they participate in different treatment programs provided by psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, and social workers. Through approaches including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, group therapy, family therapy, occupational training, recreational facilities, and outdoor activities, we attempt to bring our patients to an overall improvement, ranging from daily life skills and social skills to stress coping strategies. Ultimately, we expect to help our patients overcome the mental disorders, restore social and occupational functioning, and obtain an independent life in the community rather than in the institution. Besides patient service, we also provide consultation and counseling about social welfare for their families.Homecare
We provide outreaching follow-up monthly for the patients who have limited insight, barely maintain regular adherence to health care, or potentially pose a risk to their family and neighborhood. Through the home care service, we raise public awareness of mental health, enable families to obtain adequate caring skills for patients, provide emotional support for families, promote psychiatric literacy, and eventually enhance community mental health.
Community health care service

To enhance public awareness of mental health, we proactively integrate various public health resources, social welfare, police, internal affairs, industry, and university. We also provide up-to-date information on mental health, counseling, and medical intervention.Child and adolescent psychiatric clinic
We provide child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient clinics, regular school counseling services, and related community services. Our mission is to facilitate healthy and intact lives for children and adolescents in communities and schools to avoid worsening of psychiatric illness to decrease family and social burden.
We will assess developmental milestones, family situations, psychiatric symptoms, mental status, interpersonal relationships, learning situations, and behavior problems for children and adolescents. We also will rate children and adolescents based on standardized scales (such as Chinese child developmental inventory, Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Version IV, Adaptive Behavior Assessments System-II), and these results provide evidence for further diagnosis. Our psychologists also provide standardized assessments (such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fifth Edition, Wechsler Preschool and primary scale of intelligence, Bayley scales of infant development) for the delayed children and adolescents.
We provide psychiatric diagnosis, psychological assessments, brief psychological counseling, pharmacological treatments, behavior therapies, and parental consultations. We also referred patients to family therapies, functional assessments, and social resource counseling.
Methadone maintenance therapy clinic
We cooperate with the Ministry of Health and Welfare to promote the “AIDS prevention and maintenance therapy program.” The service enhances the motivation and attendance rate of the maintenance therapy for patients with substance use disorder, case management and effective follow-up service, and the evaluation of the efficacy of maintenance therapy program.
Alcohol use disorder treatment program
We provide diagnosis and treatment for alcohol use disorder and its associated disorders such as alcohol withdrawal syndrome, alcohol-related sleep disorder, and mood disorder. Our assessment tools include Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), CAGE Alcohol Questionnaire (CAGE), serum tests, brain image including brain CT, EEG, and MRI. Pharmacotherapy choices include Naltrexone, antidepressants, and anxiolytics, and hypnotics.
Forensic psychiatric and psychology
Forensic psychiatry/psychology is a unique discipline dealing with the assessment of offenders with mental health problems. It requires a sophisticated understanding of the links between mental health and the law. We provide professional psychiatric and psychological evaluations for the court that may order the commencement of guardianship or assistance.
